Let the Light in

Today's Thought of the Day Problem solved

Acrylic Block Single Hungs over Corner Tub
Acrylic Block Single Hungs over Corner Tub
One of the most common complaints people have regarding their bathrooms is lack of natural light. Yet, bathroom windows necessitate window coverings, which defeat the purpose of having a window in the first place and are doubly annoying if you have to reach across a bathtub to open or close the shades.

A glass block window is a wise choice.

Today's Thought of the Day The suite life

Homes with 3 or more secondary bedrooms are often much more marketable when one of those secondary bedrooms is actually a suite-meaning a generous closet and its own private bathroom.

Stairs the new location

Today's Thought of the Day
Where did they put the stairs?
Perhaps when entering into the home via the front door was more common it made sense to have the staircase at or along the front entry.  Of course, that design philosophy shows best when elegant staircase balusters, spindles, railing and treads are used-which is expensive.

With today's reality that most of us primarily enter through the door from the garage, staircase placement options have opened up.   Often it is more convenient in terms of livability in the home to have the stairs located closer to the kitchen, whether it's heading upstairs after arriving home from a long day or coming down for breakfast in the morning.

And, you can save money on staircase aesthetics in order to get something else you really want in your home!

Don't forget to Design the Ceiling

Craig@CraigtheBuilder.com

Today's Thought of the Day  It's not a cattle chute!

Because of narrower and narrower home sites, many newer home designs have a longer entry foyer/hall.  While the long view from the entry is always a priority (perhaps a fireplace or wall of windows out the back), equal consideration needs to be paid to designing the entry hall so that it doesn't feel like a "tunnel".

Ceiling heights in entry halls are often taller for an added sense of spaciousness, and this space can also be ideal for showcasing interesting ceiling details.  Lighting in the entry hall is important, too, because if it is darker it will feel more closed-in.  Another designer touch is to incorporate recessed display niches in the walls of the hallway for displaying art.  This "gallery feel" is amazing compared with simply hanging pictures along the entry hall!
